Matt Wagner discusses Batman Vs. Grendel hardcover; CBLDF fundraiser
Newsarama’s Matt Brady recently interviewed Matt Wagner - creator of Grendel and artist/writer of the recently collected Batman Vs. Grendel - about the allocated over-ordering of the limited edition hardcover, and his Ebay auction fundraiser for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, consisting of none other than a signed/beautifully sketched artist proof edition of the sold out hardcover.
Read on for more.
Newsarama site excerpt follows:
So were you one of the fans of Matt Wagner’s Grendel who ordered the limited edition hardcover edition of Batman vs. Grendel…and didn’t get it?
You’re not alone.
The book, which retails for $99.95 was significantly over-ordered, and as a result, went into Diamond’s allocation system. End of story lots of people went without.
And here is an excerpt from the Ebay auction, which ends June 15th.
Now, writer/artist and creator of Grendel, MATT WAGNER has donated one of his own, private editions to the CBLDF. This volume is numbered 18/AP out of only 65 Artist Proof editions and is signed by Wagner on the book’s exclusive signature plate.
Additionally, Wagner has rendered and signed a fully painted original “sketch” inside the book. This eye-catching piece depicts both Batman as well as the infamous Hunter Rose incarnation of Grendel and stretches across the front, black endpapers, spanning the binding gutter.

That’s one helluva sketch.
A great gesture on part of Matt Wagner, and kudos to Newsarama for spreading the word.
Btw, if the Ebay auction is out of your price range, or you missed out on the hardcover edition for whatever reason, the series is also collected in softcover. Sure, it literally won’t stand on it’s own, but hey, it’s a great read no matter the format.
